Deep in the Cotes d'Armor countryside in Brittany, within walking distance of the spectacular Chateau de la Roche Jagu and the beautiful Trieux River and within easy driving distance of the many beauty spots on the spectacular Pink Granite coastline.

The cottage in springtime

A stone built "longere"  or 'long house' in the traditional Breton style, set in its own grounds of approx 1 acre close to Chateau de la Roche Jagu and the small town of Pontrieux. At the end of a country lane cul-de-sac amongst cornfields and trees so there is no passing traffic to worry about!

In spite of its country location the cottage is close to lots of interesting things to see and do in the vicinity. Click the button below for more details.....

Description of the surroundings

The cottage has a ground floor double bedroom (double glazed) with ample space for a cot or extra single bed. Also on g/f is a spacious dining/sitting room (double glazed) with tiled floor and a third large g/f sitting room/bedroom with tiled floor. To rear is a g/f kitchen, utility room and shower room with basin w.c. and shower. Upstairs are two twin bedded bedrooms and a bathroom - the latter with basin, bath, bidet, and loo. Outside the rear door is a decked terrace area for sitting out etc.

The kitchen has a gas cooker with grill and double oven, gas hob with four rings, dish-washer, microwave, floor standing larder fridge, table and benches for four people. The utility room has washing machine, sink and second fridge. For heating in the winter the cottage has a couple of night store heaters downstairs - the dining/sitting room has a solid fuel stove.  The third downstairs room can be used as a sitting room or a bedroom - and has an open fireplace - good for roasting chestnuts gathered from the chestnut "walk" nearby on the road down to the jetty beside the Trieux (rather grandly called "Le Port "). There is a TV (French terrestrial and also UK free to air satellite TV) with a video (plays UK videos) and a region 2 DVD player and a hi fi/stereo. Most modern mobiles receive a good signal at the cottage so communications and 'texting' are easy! The cottage has a wi-fi broadband internet access point which we can use with laptops. The downstairs shower room has loo, basin, and thermostatic shower.

The cottage has an outside store which can house a small pool table and garden furniture. There is a west facing rear decked area which is ideal for drinks in the evening sunshine, and new in 2007 there is a large decked area with large picnic table and a fixed barbecue. From here there are splendid views across the nearby countryside. Although close to the UK, this area of Brittany has a climate which is usually (although not always!) just that important bit warmer than that in the UK. The cottage benefits from being well away from the west coast so tends not to suffer from coastal sea mists or fog in westerly winds. During north west winds when ominous cumulus clouds are brewing over the landmass to the south, the cottage can often be bathed in sunshine!

We often use the cottage for quick breaks as it is easy to reach - Plymouth ferryport is accessed by dual carriageway and M5 and Brittany Ferries takes us to Roscoff. Thereafter 50 minutes down the RN 12 motorway eastwards towards St Brieuc and from there the cottage is only 20 minutes distant. The more scenic coastal road via Lannion is pleasanter but takes a bit longer. From the ferryport of St Malo the cottage is approx two hours – much of it on motorway.  Ferry sailings to St Malo are from Portsmouth but the Fastcraft also goes there from Poole (via Jersey).

Cherbourg is a long drive away from the cottage - 4 to 5 hours through Normandy and Brittany - but the sea crossing is short.  Brittany Ferries 'Fastcraft' does it with less than 2 hours on the open sea.

There is now an air link from Exeter to Brest (an hour and a half's drive away) by Easijet  and a new link is starting in 2008 from Newquay to St Brieuc (half an hour's drive distant)
